4. Deadlift Execution Rules

A lift begins when the lifter initiates the pull from the floor.

To receive a good lift:

  • The bar must be lifted from the floor to a fully locked-out position.
  • The lifter must stand upright with knees and hips locked.
  • Shoulders must be back in a stable position.
  • The bar must be motionless at the top before receiving the down command.

The judge will give the command: "DOWN"

  • The lifter must then return the bar to the platform under control.
  • Dropping the bar intentionally may result in a failed lift.

5. Causes for a No Lift

A lift will be ruled no lift if any of the following occur:

  • The bar moves downward before reaching lockout
  • The lifter fails to fully lock knees or hips
  • The lifter leans back excessively or ramps the bar up the thighs

  • The bar is dropped or uncontrolled on the descent
  • The lifter steps or loses balance
  • Hitching or resting the bar on the thighs

6. Judging

  • Lifts will be judged by three judges.
  • Judges will give a Good Lift or No Lift decision.
  • The majority decision determines the result.

7. Attempt Selection

  • Lifters must submit opening attempts before the meet begins.
  • After each attempt, lifters will have 60 seconds to declare their next weight.
  • The next attempt must be equal to or greater than the previous attempt.

8. Timing

  • Lifters will have 60 seconds to begin their attempt once their name is called and the bar is loaded.
  • Failure to start the lift within the time limit will result in a missed attempt.
